“Leaving and Waving” is a heart-wrenching collection of photographs taken by Deanna in the course of twenty-seven years. From 1991, she captured each departure as she waved good-bye and drove away after visiting her parents at their home. Unfolding a profound and moving story about family, aging, and the sorrow of saying good-bye, it also chronicles the passage of time and the inevitability of life and death.
Deanna Dikeman (Sioux City, Iowa, 1954) started photographing her midwestern family and surroundings in 1985. She is the recipient of two prominent fellowships and her work was chosen as one of the top twenty-five stories of 2020 in The New Yorker.
