Stromboli
At Cortona On The Move, the island of Stromboli is presented through a dual perspective: through the images of Federico Patellani, who wandered the set of Roberto Rossellini’s Stromboli (Terra di Dio) in 1949—several scenes from which will be screened in the exhibition—and through that of Chiara Indelicato, contemporary author of the Pelle di Lava (Skin of Lava) project and a resident of the island.

Chiara Indelicato‘s photographic project sits at the intersection of visual art and political engagement, questioning the fragile balance between humanity and the environment. Taken on the island of Stromboli, where the author lives, the images are the result of meticulous observation of the territory and are created entirely (both for development and printing) with a technique that uses non-toxic substances: coffee, vitamin C, and seawater. The work aims to explore the modern, constantly evolving way of inhabiting the volcanic island to understand and convey the suffering of nature and its mysterious language. Stromboli is an island, a volcano, a microcosm in the heart of the Mediterranean that embodies the global challenge of climate change.

Bio
Chiara Indelicato (b. 1987, Italy) is an independent artist. Her practice explores alternative analog photographic processes, in dialogue with her research on the memory of isolated territories and marginalized narratives.
Federico Patellani (1911–1977, Italy) was an undisputed protagonist in the history of Italian photojournalism. A key photographer for the weekly magazine “Tempo” and the author of the manifesto “Il giornalista nuova formula” (New Formula Journalist, 1943), he witnessed all the events that shaped Italian society from the postwar period until his death in 1977.
