Often the hardest thing is to see what’s right before our eyes, like places we forget simply because we’ve seen them too often.
The work Video-Stadium, created in 1997 by artist Paola Di Bello, is a fixed shot of one of the pillars of the third tier of the San Siro Stadium in Milan. At the end of the match, spectators descend the spiral ramps and, through an optical-perceptual effect, literally make them “spin” on themselves, so much so that they appear to be screwed into the ground.
The towers of the San Siro Stadium, without the fans leaving the stadium at the end of the match, do not spin, do not dance, do not come to life. The artist takes the question of seeing to its maximum inventive potential, in which the architecture of the stadium’s columns activates a new visual interpretation of reality.
