Ca Sa Padrina – Letter to my Grandmother’s House
Ca Sa Padrina revolves around the final farewell of Maya Valencia to the family home located in the Son Espanyolet neighborhood in Palma, on Mallorca. In this house her grandparents lived their entire lives. Following their deaths, she has been trying to navigate the grief of these losses and of the house. In fact, in Mallorca more and more foreign investors seek to buy properties, convert them into vacation rentals, or sell them to foreigners. This practice turns into a collective pain over an urban transformation that forces lifelong residents to leave. Housing has become a luxury. This project is an act of resistance against the effects of gentrification, to preserve living memory, and to create community.

Maya Valencia (1994, Mallorca) is a documentary and conceptual photographer who investigates how we construct our environment and how we relate to it.
