Maria Abranches
Maria

Winning project of the third edition of the COTM Award

Maria tells the story of Ana Maria Jeremias, an Angolan woman who was induced to leave her homeland at the age of nine for Portugal. Following the false promise of an education she never received, she instead spent the rest of her life cleaning the houses of her employers. This project, expressed in a diary form, recovers the memories and identity of a racialized woman whose life has been shaped by the structural inequalities of Portuguese society, deeply marked by its colonial past. Offering a critical perspective on middle-class privilege, Maria is an attempt to restore to women the recognition that has always been denied to them, as well as their right to memory and citizenship.
