“Stranger Fruit” was created in response to the senseless murders of black men across the United States by police violence. Who is next? Jon symbolically photographs mothers and sons as modern “Pietas” in their environment, reenacting what it must feel like to endure this pain. After the criminal acts, lost in the furor of media coverage is the plight of the mothers: regardless of the legal outcome, they must carry on without their children.
Jon Henry (New York, USA, 1982) is a visual artist working with photography and text. His work reflects on trauma and healing within the African American community. He was recently named one of TIME Magazine NEXT100 for 2021.
