Joel Sternfeld
Campagna Romana (Roman Countryside)

Campagna Romana. The Countryside Of Ancient Rome is the body of work Joel Sternfeld developed between 1989 and 1991. Following in the footsteps of painters who traveled from Europe and the United States to see Rome, Sternfeld was also drawn to the unique light of these places on the outskirts of the great city, which preserves the vestiges of its imperial past while also being open to the influences of the present. The Roman countryside, which over the centuries has been a marshland, a theater of war, and the setting for numerous works of art, reminds us that, despite the visible signs of contemporaneity, there are glimpses that remain unchanged over time.
