Sohei Nishino

The Po and Diorama Map Venice, works from 2018 and 2026 respectively, capture the experiences of Japanese artist Sohei Nishino during his travels in Italy. These are not accurate maps of the territories he visited, but rather the expression of his memories and the artist’s physical connection with the landscapes and people he encountered along the way.
On the banks of Italy’s longest river or in the maze of canals of the Venetian lagoon, Nishino has filled hundreds of rolls of film. From the contact prints, he then cut out what became the small fragments of his works.
The geographical representation abandons any attempt to correspond to reality to convey the human process by which it was perceived by those who experienced it.
