Taysir Batniji
Distance & Belonging
The exhibition outlines the work of Palestinian artist Taysir Batniji through three projects: Home Away From Home, Disruptions, and At Home, Elsewhere shape a reflection on notions of exile, belonging, identity, and memory. In Home Away From Home, Batniji traces the fate of his cousins who moved from Gaza to the United States; Disruptions stems from the Israeli blockade making physical contact with the author’s hometown and mother impossible. Lastly, in At Home, Elsewhere, Batniji documents his exile from Gaza to various cities, until he finally settles in Paris. These three works are linked by the experience of distance, the reconstruction of a sense of belonging far from one’s homeland, and the desire to preserve ties.
