Carmen Winant
The Last Safe Abortion

Focusing on the nearly fifty-year period during which abortion was legal in the United States (1973–2022), The Last Safe Abortion recognizes the care, advocacy, and community-building of abortion workers. The photographs are surprisingly regular, showing scenes in which women answer the phone, sterilize medical equipment, and schedule appointments. Winant draws from over a dozen personal, organizational, and institutional archives from across the Midwest to propose a visual narrative that addresses abortion rights and care.

Carmen Winant (1983, San Francisco, United States) is an artist who utilizes archival and authored photographs to examine feminist care networks. Her projects have been shown at the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the ICA Boston, and many other art institutions.
