Alessandro Toscano‘s project raises the increasingly relevant issue of mass tourism in Italian art cities, which attract more than 50 million visitors each year.
Toscano’s digitally processed images show us overcrowded locations—Rome, Pisa, Florence—and highlight the ability of overtourism to alter the perception and morphology of landscapes. Like vast media backdrops, cities overrun by tourists are often the most photographed: Toscano brings to light the relationship between large-scale social phenomena and the world of media, challenging the observer to formulate a new way of interpreting the complex social dynamics that permeate these places.
