Three thousand shoe shiners go out into the streets of La Paz and El Alto suburbs (Bolivia), each day in search of clients. What characterizes this “tribe” is the use of ski masks so they will not be recognized and discriminated against. No one knows that they work as shoe shiners and this anonymity makes them tougher.
For three years Estol collaborated with sixty shoe shiners associated with the NGO Hormigón Armado, producing a street photo-essay to fight against their social discrimination.
Federico Estol (Montevideo, Uruguay, 1981) is an Uruguayan photographer, artistic director of San José Foto festival. He has participated in numerous festivals around the world.
